I would cut out footholds with the saw,do em nice and deep then you can use them again next time.

 

Or you could nail bits of wood on like the kids do, I deal with nail infested trees on a daily basis and the seem to be OK on it:laugh1:

What ever you do make sure you think about self rescue. If it's going to be that hard for you to get up there how long would a rescuer take if you needed it?

 

If I was rescuing in that situation I'd whack on my spikes if needs be screw the tree.

Narrow access Spider leg mewp will get pretty much anywhere, and will be loads cheaper than leg looping the whole tree, also been said before and not answered why not get the ladders above your pollard point Or put a throw line nice and high above said point and spike from their? Only had leg loop one thing before and wouldn't want to do it again

BenR stuck his neck out, but I got to say I agree. Although I have used spikes on reductions only when I cut out the limbs I was spiking on.

 

For sure Marc, no worries above the pollard points and Johnny I will stick to my guns. You can use slings below the pollard points, climb base anchored srt through the regrowth then choke your line for the last cuts, choke an adjustable ropeguide or cambium saver below the pollard points, whatever.. There are options and it just requires a bit of thought to use them. So I'm sticking to what I said.

Nope, well at 150 quid a day, their not that dear, and you would be able to do it quicker saving time and theirfore money, ie it might have taken a day a tree, then do both in one day with a mewp:001_tt2:
