I judge it as appropriate to the audience. So, if I am doing woodland felling, its Forester, climbing - Surgeon, or consultancy erm, Consultant! I experimented once with a catch all term of Tree Expert, and to be honest I immediately felt pretentious, irrespective of whether or not it was true!

I agree with the idea that Arborist is mainly an Americanism and Tree Surgeon is much widely more understood, if not a wholly accurate description, in the UK.

While we're on the issue of nomenclature, the other word used (and often misspelt) is Arboriculturist not Arboriculturalist - as the latter does not follow the rules of the English language - but its an easy mistake to make!

For example: Pianist, Dentist, Acupuncturist, Agronomist, Cosmetologist etc...

But its a corruption of latin

I rather like steves point 'tree climer' or tree cutter, cover the practical side of it.

Strangely I have a hatred of the term consultant, and profer advisor, but my card says Consultant and advisor.

As for the spelling thing, as i said way back on pag 2 most of us cant spell anyway lol

is there a differance ,do explain :001_smile:

I would consider myself the dogs body, the monkey that climbs the tree and does the work. I can do what ever work is put in front of me...but I'm still learning...if i'm honest, (and in my view this is the difference.) My tree id is okay, and fungi knowledge is basic...my understanding of what the fungi's do, recognising the not so obvious signs of dangerous trees...all of which I would consider a true Arboriculturist to know, and therefore be able to explain what they are and how best to deal with the tree to the client.

That said I am keen to learn it...so with time and experience...I can eventually consider myself an Arboriculturist...

and just one more to throw in is a 'monkey with a chainsaw'!
