Erm, I dont think so, its not quite as glamerous as portrayed, round the clock shifts with little contact home to name a few. Prison with the added risk of drowning was more like it!

Not to mention seasickness. Why did I join the navy I couldn't get much farther from the sea.

 

I thought about the national service bit but would you want a down and out as an oppo?

However I watched (think it was) 1940s benefit. They got pittance to survive on and had work placements or lose the benefit. One 19 lad never worked since school, got £7 a week. Once on the placement he loved it and got a labouring job at £80 a day after it finished.

Hi, exactly & certainly not anywhere near a nuclear power plant as I used to oversee!
