Stihl 064 gone wrong

My saw has started playing up today. Won't idle worth a Dam and is revving its nuts off then when you release the throttle it continues to rev. Tried adjusting the carb but has no effect. Planning on taking it to stihl dealer later in the week but just wondering if anyone had any ideas on cause/ solution as dealer could tell me anything to get my cash. The saw is Stihl 064

First thing to check is that with the throttle closed, the throttle linkage isn't getting held open at all. You should be able the squeeze the throttle slightly before the throttle arm on the carb starts to move.

You could start the saw and then manually push the throttle linkage close to see if you can get the revs to die.

If this doesn't work it sounds like a bad air leak, to go this quickly, it sounds like an impulse line or inlet manifold split but could be a possible disintegrated seal.

Don't run it - get it checked out now as lean running may seize the saw if run flat out:thumbdown:

Got saw back today. Cause was a faulty gasket and the ignition coil was on the blink. Running good now however while in collecting I had a wee shot of a 461, very nice. Thinking of ditching the 064 and getting one of these. Do I need my head read?

The 461 and 064 are very different things. The 064 will give you torque and chew through big stuff but it's pretty unrefined. The 461 gives you speed and reduced weight but will top out on max diameter faster.

You could always buy the 461 and keep the 064....

Think my wife would sell me if I did that.:laugh1: Don't use it that often and think that a 75cc saw would work alongside my husky 365.
