I have been taught that a reef knot should not be relied upon as it comes undone very easily indeed. Woodpicker is taking the piss incase anyone decides to try and make prussik loops with a reef (square) knot! :001_rolleyes:

on the contairy my boy when you use the reef knot you have 3" off play which you tape down 2" & leave 1" visable so to check any movement i used them for 15yrs 1 never came free & i never fell from a tree :tongue_smilie:

Zeppelin bend is useful to know for joining two ropes together

Yeah, i have used this knot - it is shown in the art and science of practical rigging by Peter S Donzelli and Sharon J Lilly.

is the quick hitch not also called a slipery sheet bend

and i think the best knot for rope to rope is a sheet bend and that its easier to tie

tie a marine spike (normal knot used for saws etc) put the rope through the loop and pull the loop back out (as you would to undo normally) this then pulls the lowering rope through with it and results in a sheet bend

and its very easy and quick to tie

It seems everyone's using a double fishermans to attack their friction hitches?

I always use a buntline because it's a smaller knot and it sits neater on a single karabiner.
