Kretzschmaria deusta on Lime?

This large Lime tree snapped off half way up its stem in the recent strong winds. I was wondering whether you all thought that this was the possible work of Kretzschmaria deusta? I checked round the base of the tree and found no visible signs. However is this it half way up? Pics 1 and 2 are of the piece that came down. Your help would be appreciated.

Would of been almost impossible to have noted from a ground inspection at that height.

Cheers guys, thought it was. Never knowingly seen it half way up a tree before. Is it common? Or will there have been signs on the ground and I have just missed them? Many thanks again.

Unusual to be at height in my experience, but we have come across the fruitbodies and associated decay up on the trunk.

 

I would of thought there would be evidence at the base of Kretzschmaria on this tree as well

Thats what foxed me. I'm not saying there were no signs. But I am familiar with the obvious fruiting bodies round the base ect.

 

I am heading back to look at the other trees in the area. Sadly this incident has put the wind up the estate owner as the tree failed in the middle of the village.

 

Hopefully there wont be any more problems, however she is already speaking of large reductions of the rest of the trees round this one.

 

Due to the recent winds I am sure trees will have unnecessary work carried out on them! Not good!

Interesting it's half way up a stem, I look forward to surveying limes as they are quite reliable, like planes. I will keep an eye out in future

If you get the chance, take a trowel and have a little dig around the root crown/base of trunk, also give the trunk a tap with a soft faced nylon type hammer or wooden mallet, you should be able to 'hear' the decay if its there.

 

Sometimes find the fb's low down amongst the grass and soil.

I found it 10m up a beech a couple of years ago, no evidence at ground level, the decay was extensive too. Thats the only time i have seen it at hight too

Not unusual here for Kd to grow mid stem

But not common

Often initiated by tearout wounds or too big a pruning wound

Unrelated to basal conditions

This points to Need to use binocs when assessing

Maybe if you document the wounding/rot connection

And lack of same in neghbors you can spare them the chop
