7.5 Ton Truck Laws

Yes I've got c1e which takes me up to 11,000 kg gross train weight,so if you've got a pre 97 license you only need to do a heavy trailer test ,but that still costs money ,without c1e you can go up to 8250kg.

 

 

As you say my grandfather right to C1+E has a 107 code, this restricts gross train weight to 8.25 tonnes. I thought I needed the C test before I could go further but I see the logic in just needing the heavy trailer to get to 12000kg GTW for C1+E with no code. Not that I ever intend taking another test and I avoid driving anything bigger than transit size.

 

It seems mad that I am asked to drive a lorry after having taken a car test in a Hilman Imp 44 years ago so I decline except for dire need.

 

My advice to post 1997 licence holders is to get the trailer test for behind a B licence vehicle and then go for c and E if they feel like it, anything in between is poor value as the training costs much the same.

I'd agree I just did c1e because that's all I needed and could do it in my own 7.5 tonner with a hired trailer and a couple of days tuition which worked out much cheaper than a full blown c and e course.

I dont know which class of license is needed anymore because they seem to have made it overly complicated ,when I took my class1 for the artic it was dead simple, pay £500 to drive around in circles for a mind numbing 3 days, test day and job done. It is worth going for the trailer license on a 7.5 tonner because some of them have a decent train weight which would allow 4 ton plus on a trailer as well. Despite what the 4x4 boys think a 7.5 ton truck is a far better towing vehicle, to the point that you have to keep checking the mirrors to see if the trailers still attached. At the end of the day its a small investment for a huge gain and if nothing else driving is another job you can do if all goes squiffy.
