I was looking at it last night and tbf that littel starter is pulling a heavy load not only has it got the Diesel engine to turn it's got the fly wheel to turn to.

 

I'd say its 45 quid we'll spent and I'm even wounding wheather it's worth doing evry say 8yrs or so as a mantinance thing.

 

If you mean 8 hours of cranking then that should give you many years of service, 8 hours of chipper run would be somewhat excessive, the brushes would be hardly bedded in.

 

Swapping the brushes is however something that's well within the abilities of the DIY'er

Often you will find its the contacts in the solinoid are pitted. I would imagine the price of copper now they are not as good quality or as big as they used to be. 1/2 hr job every few years. Probably better sorting your starter rather than exchanging it for a bodged one that has been to the moon and back.
