stihl 4 mix hedge cutter engines- flooding of filter issue

Well- turns out today we really need a solution to a longstanding issue.

We have found that when the engines roll filter down when travelling that the filter floods and starting is difficult/impossible due to the filter element getting soaked in fuel.

Has anyone found a solution other than replacing and drying out the wet one.

This Stihl engine is a pile of poo.

This issue eclipses the noise issue though.

Much appreciate any help as the power is hard to beat and we have tried Echo but they were too delicate for us to use for general trimming jobs.

Hi i've had this problem for years its the one thing that lets 4 mix engine down.

there is a vent in fuel tank, replace this and all will be well for a while... i carry spare in van and tools to fix , the tank vent only costs few quid.

Thanks- is that a vent in the fuel cap? I haven't worked on these engines yet.

Replace the engine with an FS-70- it's 2 mix not 4 mix, and a very nice improvement. Runs a polesaw, hedgecutter and bed tiller very well indeed.

No, the little sod sits in the top of the tank under the carb, it has a bit of hose which connects it to the airbox, hence the soaking of the filter.

 

Easiest to drop the tank to change it.

I have the same sort of problem on my hs81's plus it leaks fuel,, and running can be a problem too

There was a post a while ago about this, the solution a tank vent off an echo hedgecutter that was fitted into the pipe.

But they are for some reason known to fail after a while. Don't know why, and will probably never know.

 

Buy a spare as they don't cost much, if you really love the 4 mix rubbish anyway. Personally I would ditch it for another.

love the 4 mix rubbish = not a chance. Hated them from day 1
