Looks to me like David’s brain just couldn’t squeeze into that tiny space it used to call home. He was up that Beech looking for the elusive fungi called ‘Quorn’, nodded off and the surplus fungi-orientated part of his brain decided to take up residence in that Beech tree.

Youre going straight to hell for that one when David reads it John. On youre own head be it. Be careful, I,ve heard he,s always tooled up.

This is located on an approx 200 year beech about 15 feet up, looked a lot more orange when first viewed, photo seems to make it look more pail.

Its a beech tree mate. I'd also say its on a busy cross road, so it probably needs felling.

My original thoughts were around a very desicated Laetiporus, which would not be good news, but now think it could possibly (stressed as it is obviously pretty desicated) be either Phlebia tremellosa or P. radiata - Jelly Bracket.

Colours could fit in with your description.

Usually found on stumps of birch and Beech.

So could fit in with a stratergy of being saprophytic (if there is localised disfunction) as Giles has suggested.
