From what you have said it sounds like the stump is relatively small. Is it not worth just grinding the stump for free, getting paid and seeing the back of the job. I understand it may be a matter of principle now but is it worth it?

Indeed. You need to draw attention to them before any contract is entered into, ie on your quotation. Anything issued after is merely a receipt and so you won't be able to rely on it. If I remember correctly, it's covered by Lord Denning in Thornton v Shoe Lane Parking.

In that case, it couldn't hurt to change the words 'Cash receipt' to 'Quotation' on a few of them...

Some info is generic, i write quotation or invoice on the top where it says to and then at the bottom received via which method of payment means one copy for everything other wise it gets expensive >
