An answer from someone who has been in this position would be much appreciated. Where did you start out???

ive only done one competition.....you just use your own kit, doesnt need to be lolered as everything is inspected on the morning of the competition. i'd recommend having a try at least once. there are 5 disciplines, work climb, aeriel rescue, footlock, speed climb, and throwline. im sure someone will post up a link to the rules which will give you a better idea of what each event involves.

Just bring your kit and turn up and have a go Frank, everyone is really supportive and helpfull, if there is something you need that you haven't got then someone will usually lend it to you for the event.

i was kinda dissapointed if im honest...i went in with the wrong attitude. i was very happy with what i'd done.....aeriel rescuse for instance...i think my time was 3rd quickest...unfortunately that doesnt count for squat and in the points table i was something like 20th.....its all about play acting in that particular event, something which isnt really my thing. speedclimb, throwline and footlock i didnt do so good at but then didnt expect to either. work climb, again, my time i think was pretty high up there, but missed out on a lot of points. i did win the novice section....but i think there was only 2 novices haha.

i'd recomend going and having a look first

I like the sound of speed climb and work climb. Would I be advised to go watch a comp first???

Did you do any good ???

Don't turn up just to watch Frank, just have a go, I was rubbish, i did'nt score on the footlock or speed climb and timed out on the aerial rescue but still scored some points. It was a learning experience and i know how to do better next time. I'm not worrried about how well i do anyway its just a good laugh.

If you turn up to watch, then yo might as well have a go, as most of the day is spent watching anyway. In fact if you add up the times for each event then you spend less than half an hour competing and the rest watching.

You don't need chainsaw trousers, obviose maybe, but many can't imagine climbing without them! Jeans are fine, and if you have any fabric type walking boots then they are good and fun to climb in compared to chainsaw boots. Helemt and glasses, harness and rope thats about it really.

When I started I had to borrow nearly everything! I've done nearly 30 comps now and am still learning stuff, its all good. It will be the best value tree climbing course you will ever go on! Gauranteed!

Just go and have a go Frank, you may surprise yourself, I did the NW comp a few years back, no foot locking or owt.

I just turned up an had a go, came runner up, won a lovely turned Ash bowl.

Did it again the following year and came runner up again and won an new 020T!!!!
