One of our jobs from yesterday's wind was a large red chestnut that fell over a pond, after removal there were a lot of bubbles/foam on the pond and the fish were dying/dead (orfe and goldfish mainly not sure if the koi survived).

We used veg cooking oil as chain lube as that was to hand, so looking for an explanation on the fish and foam could it be tannin??

If there were branches in the pond, it could be that the bottom got stirred up. If it was anoxic, H2S and some other anaerobic products could have been released out of the sediment and poisoned the fish. I can't believe veg oil from the chain has caused that.

I would be looking in the bottom of the pond ,something odd there with the bubbles coming up

Can't see it being the oil it would float on the top

what sort of filtration does the pond have

if it was sediment from the bottom of the pond you would smell it a mile away

Think he did go in wearing waders so plenty of stirring occurred, not sure what the filters are but it didn't smell too offensive when I returned this morning and I did have a probe about with the net

Rember being told that chestnut has something in it that's dodgy for waterways, dosnt it look like an oil spill when you chip it?

It seems strange for the goldfish to die, they are hardy not so koi and orf. First thing to do would be to test the water for ammonia, nitrites,ph, etc to rule any of those out. Most pond keepers have a test kit. The foam could be caused by proteins in the water. Best thing to do would be get some fresh water in there and then have a constant trickle in to dilute what ever is in there.
