Can we tip this pile at yours it's 2 days chipping

This week produced the same again, we are a small outfit this is just what a 3-4 man team can produce in a week at busy times. We do tip at various sites but just the odd load.

Like Jenks as long as getting rid of chip remains profit neutral we are happy with that, although a bonus is always nice!

We'll take it if you want shot of it for free, but you have to get it to us in Ingatestone, Essex. :001_smile:

there was a farmer down our way having it for his cow tracks from field to farm have anybody tried farmers in your catchment areas to see if there are any takers
We used to offer a free tip for woodchip but had to stop as the understanding on 'clean' didn't seem to register. Chip plus everyone's lunch packaging would be a better description. Shame but not worth the hassle.

At what sort of price are people happy delivering chip to a central location. ie within 25 miles of your location. Just thinking out aloud whether a woodchip franchise would work.

I would think dropping chip a bit like delivering logs 5 miles ok 15 miles takes half the morning especially if they are out in the sticks and have not spoken to someone for three weeks. What do people do with chip once its sat in their yard ? why does it have to be profit neutral or is that just for the person dropping it off. If someone dropped their waste in my yard without paying I would expect to get money for it.

Thats what I want to know. At what price is it worth taking to a central chip site ie paid say £10 per tonne just for tipping rather than £3 per tonne and having to load the wagon. Initial thought would be sites with storage capacity of 1000 tonnes with weighbridge and site electric connection of 500KW then to process from site to site with mobile plant.

That's a concept that, I personally, have a great deal of difficulty getting through to staff. Your comment is exactly what I tell our staff, why should the recipient have to go litter picking.

It's the same on site clearances. The fact that machines are clearing the site doesn't mean, to me, that it's okay to throw your rubbish away.

We use it as a mulch around trees and beds around the estate. Having worked in Arb for a few years before taking on my current role, I know how invaluable it is to have a network of places to dump chip on '2 truckload days' when working away from home and so am pleased to offer a service that is mutually beneficial. We don't get tonnes and tonnes of the stuff in but we get enough to get by. We can always use more though.

Why have the stress of worrying about it? At these prices, by the time you factor in storage, loader + fuel and your own time to load it for them, it can't make economical sense. Just have a list of places that will happily let you tip there. We even put the kettle on for the driver when we get a delivery. :thumbup1:

We've sold about £2000 worth of chip this year. It's not going to make you rich but more than pays for loading.

Prices have ranged from £6 (don't bother unless space is an issue)-£10 a ton. An arctic takes between 16-30 tons. We pay a local farmer a morning to load a couple of arctics. It is much easier that having to find a place to dump it.

At £6 the costs of loading are just covered but at £10 it's an OK earner. We had to pay to spread it on the fields a 7 or 8 years back.. For £3 it would be barely cover the cost of loading..

We have a 10 inch chipper and are careful about keeping it clean a free of logs etc.. The demand is only going to increase, Drax powerstation wants to be 50% wood chip powered in the near future and they are going to be importing wood from the other side of the world! My 2-300 tons would probably last seconds in a powerstation..

If you are making money from it then that is great. For those like the OP who are receiving a derisory amount for the chip, plus the inconvenience of storing and loading it, and who have a suitable site offered to them, my suggestion is a viable alternative. :001_smile:
