Hey Swinny, had the exact same issue on my 06 Shogun, just had it done this week. I was getting flashing 4x4 light when not in 4wd, solid light when in 4wd but 4wd not behaving properly (just felt weird think it was popping in/out) I was also getting random ABS light and random gearbox light sometimes as I turned it on, sometimes after 50 or more miles.

Local garage during the MOT said it was a faulty sensor, would need a diagnostic with Mitsibushi.

Mitsibushi Diagnostic = £89.95 inc vat

They found "internal failure of 4WD Solenoids - applied vacuum to 4WD actuator but seized - replaced Actuator & Solenoids"

from the invoice...

Actuator FR Axle FRE 177.92 (+vat)

Valve, Freewheel clut 115.73 (+vat)

The bits cost £423.28 fitted + the diagnostic cost

Yeah Ouch!

Chap who works for me occassionally bought a 53 plate, one owner mint condition 30,000 miles engine let go taking out the clutch, flywheel and gearbox luckily bought from main dealer work done under warranty never sounded right after that got rid.

That cost more to fix than my Landrover 90 and discovery cost to buy combined!

Which is why I'm going back to LR

.....as soon as this Jap moneybin is sold :sneaky2:

I bought a 54 plate L200 ........ It was a good price so went for it without researching.

Same issue with 4wd light....... Then engine light.......

Got rid of ASAP

Upon later research I should never have touched the L200.... and that's any age!

I looked at the L200 and did not like the 3500 mile servicing in those days the horrible gear change, the low gearing and crap gear change poor 1973 feeling seats etc. But in hindsite I should have left the Navara alone as well that drives better but falls to bits and blows up as well.

If 4wd drive light is flashing crawl under and find the actuator nod the back in the middle of the front axle. Pull the cover back and spray with wd40. Also check the pipes they sometimes split near the actuator.

There are several of these little things on the shogun, I assume they are all roughly the same part, just some do the locking hubs and the varying 4x4 modes.

My local garage tested, examined and fitted a new one for about £40 (which was the cost of the part only).

They would not let me pay any labour because it only took about 15 mins.

Though I gather 5 are easy to get to and the 6th on top of the transfer case requires the removal if the centre console and possibly one of the seats.

Another thing, it is not the end of the world if you have the flashing. As long as it is just an actuator then you can carry on driving as you want with the flashing on. No imminent danger of damage, as I was told by the mitsi mechanic.
