ok. so i want to carve a memorial bench for a very good friend of the missis who passed away a year ago.

he was her best friend and we want to do something, so a bench sounds like a good idea.

now the problem part, as i cant afford a decent piece of timber i do have a huge lime lump i could do something with maybe.

so first is can i use it? is it worth trying with lime? what ways of preserving can i use?

but first off can i do anything with this? anyone local that is willing to give some pointers would be even better tho.

thanks matty.

so next question, whats going to be better, i was thinking of on its side and take off the extra bits so its one straight lump then use that. or have it upright and cut it that way?

If you can visualise how it's going to come out best go with it... Carvings like that I'm not massively experienced but my best work has been done through what you visualise in a bit of wood,if that makes any sense!!

I would be tempted to go for a throne not a bench with that lump. given how its standing now, turn the side branch into the seating area and the upright would form the back of the throne, style and details would be determined by the memories you want to evoke of the lady. its an ambitious project but given what its for, whatever you do will honor her memory
