im sure that richard on the telly told me that the queens look for a new place to set up a hive at this time of year and that at the end of summer their hive turns on them and they are killed by the new queens which disperse, hibernate then start the whole thing over again.

Chemical controls ( herbicides etc) are very bad for bees as they are very sensitive to such things...Indeed, chemicals that are approved in the uk have been banned elsewhere in europe, eg France, precisely because bees cant handle it......Glynn Percival was merrily prescribing this an' that ( turn of phrase ) whilst the truth is that bees would most likely be devastated....Dont want to start another bunfight!

I want to start a colony in my back yard...My brother has one ( or two ) on his flat roof in the city...they love it!!

Another issue as to why we are losing bees is because gardeners are planting flowers that dont produce pollen or sterile flowers to stop them from becoming invasive non native plants. So bees are not getting enough pollen to survie.Second reason is are loss of natural flower meadows being taken up by agricultral land and construction. We need nore wild pollen filled flowers.

i did a bees survey last year for bugs life and looked at the amount of bees in an hour and how many off them had pollen stuck to their legs...not that much:sad:

if you want to help your self to help the bees plant native wild flowers in your garden.Plant daffodils, thyme, gernium, lavender, pussy willow..check out this link to find more.

i planted 3000 daffodil bulbs for a school end of last year. cool. i was also told that in the states when the summer ends they ship thousands of hives across the country to work them again, the bees are knackered and their imunity is crap. also the demand for wheat is so high, farmers are planting it and it doesnt give off any pollen.
