Now I have your attention, I have a project planned on the estate lake which I need some advice on. I want to rig up some aeration for the fish and the way I have sold it to the owner is to make it in the form of a fountain for visual effect. What I need to know is what sort of flow rate pump will I need to give me a decent height(2m-ish) jet of water?

No idea, but not that large, however, a lot depends on the size of the jet, the no of jets? the nozzle configuration etc.

Are you relying on the returning water splash for most of the aeration.

Can you inject air just before the nozzle for added aeration effect.

I am really bored and have nowt else to do.

Could you consider a wooden water wheel turning in the water to lift and ret the water? via a short "flume".

Surely starting with a fountain supplier, finding the size of fountain applicable, then sussing out the pump size, cos, like , you want to be sure of the current needed cos you got a poor/limited supply:lol:

Why re-invent the wheel after all.

Anyway for that limited size of fountain an "off the shelf" package/kit probably makes most sense.

I went to a house with one of these. It was in a beautiful walled garden and the noise of the water running was very pleasant. It ended in a waterfall so you will get your aeration too.

Ideally, I would like a central high jet with a rose around it. Current is no problem as we have just run a large armoured cable to the boat house so can put a fused spur from that.

how big is the lake and do you want to ariate the whole lake or just have a nice effect. if its latter is the fountain going to be in middle of lake if so how will you clean filter on pump. unless you go for a fountain that is pumped from the shore with a filter box built in taken the feed and return.plus will need a largish pump with flow and return on it

It's not massive, just about 5-6 acres with a very small island and a good stock of carp around the 4-5lb mark. I want to achieve a noticeable increase in dissolved oxygen as well as an attractive feature which should ideally be visible from the house approximately 350m away. Have got the filtration sorted but need to know what sort of flow rate I need. I have seen one with a flow rate of 20,00 litres per hour which looks promising.

I'd want to know how much air a fountain actually creates and not get caught up in the wow factor.

Look at something around 6000 gph / 30000 lph.

 

Splashing water does create good aeration but an air compressor back up for hot weather with suitable air stones / diffusers are a lot more efficient and the fish love them.

 

Consider a caged pump rated for continuous use and avoid any sump pump like units.

 

( I used to deal in Japanese koi and run a koi shop on a lake complex - PM me if you need any advice on a pump you find)

thats a big lake its the size by the depth that you work out to get the gph for that size sellwoods would be one port of call do some very good high flow rate pumps with a largish fountain and as other post some form of ariation. but carp like it still and deep just when it gets hot then you need to put some oxygen in or algae bloom starts to grow and not nice stuff. be interested to see the photos of before during and after please
