towing with an automatic

how many of you chaps tow with an auto box ,& what motor do you use,how do you find them pros & cons .

:thumbup1:I tow occasionally with auto 300tdi disco, it does ok but prefer manual for heavy stuff. Just use 1st/2nd/3rdgear selection for steep descents or face cooking the brakes.

its got 5,speed box fitted , im new to autos ,wont be doing that much towing

IF the manufacturer designed and specced the vehicle to tow.

i.e. with transmission fluid coolers and whatever.

No worries whatsoever.

Far better than a dry clutch getting abused.

Rangey sport, v6 diesel . Fantastic vehicle for towing.

Used to have a classic range rover v8 auto, great for towing but it really confused the cruise control at about 50mph, going up even slight inclines it would change down, very annoying.

 

Then had a landcruiser 4.2 turbo auto which was also great as but no cruise so a bit less nervous.

 

The brother currently drives a ssanyong musso (?) with I think a 3l merc auto and its great.

 

If I had to buy a vehicle with a lot of towing to do I'd specify an auto box anytime but would want to test-drive it with a weighted trailer as some are too "nervous" with a heavy trailer.

I use my Trooper auto all the time for towing my braked trailer never had any issues. my offroader was auto too,

Steyr Puch never flinched bring 4 tonne of flags on a trailer with a self weight of about 1 tonne.(with good over-run brakes)

Feather the brake pedel to bring the trailer brakes on, then nail it.

No worries.

Perfectly happy all the way, though I dont think I exceeded 40mph.

But then it has the anchient, throughly tested and de-glitched MB 4 speed auto.
