Chipper sales/theft

There's a lot of chipper theft at the minute.

 

If anyone is selling a chipper, on here, free ads, eBay, wherever, would it not be a good idea to list the serial no. as part of the ad?

 

If everyone did this, after a while you could spot a hooky chipper a mile off.

 

Anyone who had one nicked could keep an eye open for their SN, and so could the police (and the AT members).

 

I can't see any negatives to this idea, can anyone else?

 

No serial number, no sale, simple.

Could Openly advertising a serial serial number just provide someone with information required to give a "warm" chipper a new ID?

It is a point, but not a valid one.

Anyone can clock the SN of a valid chipper anytime, anyway.

The SN plates would be a bastard to forge, and the manufacturer should have records of who the chipper was sold to.

 

This idea wouldn't work overnight, but I believe ultimately it would have a big impact.

 

Anyone with nothing to hide should do it.

Its amazing it hasn't been sorted already, I suspect some companies think they benefit from their customer gear disappearing in the night

Serial Nos. welded onto chassis frames/ bodywork etc. would help as well.

It wouldnt be that hard to copy a serial plate, and criminals always seem to be up there with the technology. I do think it would leave a lot of chippers open to cloning. Simplest way imho would be to have a database that anyone could search, means when buying a chipper you type in the serial number and get an answer straight away.

Its the same as ringing cars....theres pro's out there, How many stories have we heard about hinges being cut of containers etc, most are pro's so it just another hurdle they will get over.

 

But I agree it needs to be made harder for the easy selling of stolen gear

Another good idea.

The cloning idea is worth some thought, but serial plates are hard to copy.

 

Most of these shitbags can't wread or rite anyway.
