Why all the advice to leave a long stub? what's wrong with pruning to the collar?

I usually cut to the collar, the tree will naturally try and remove a branch at this point so leaving a long stub makes more work for the tree in my opinion

Just another forward bit of thinking for pruning large limbs. The idea being pathogens will encroach from the cut end, so if its further from the trunk it will take longer to decay the main stem.

We have been carrying this procedure out for several years now, especially on protected stuff, as it seems to meet the approval of the LA after one of the TO's suggested it.

Obviously avoiding large wounds is a must if possible, but in the case of damage pruning, something has to be done.

Doesn't leaving a long stub provide a food source for a pathogen to use as fuel while it attacks the trees defences?
