I do a lot of Bass fishing at this time of year. I don't have any specialist kit for it and just use a carp rod and fixed spool. I only cast 20-30 yards, so no need for anything heavier.

Do get some good hauls though.

Go to a tackle shop. The channel currents can be strong and can drag a weight far on a short time.

Heavy weight, with the grapple. A good beach rod and a simple real. Should see you straight.

I found buying rigs was easier than making my own. At about 1.50 a time its not worth spending hours making them.

Be prepared to lose some gear. Do some tea search on what's about where you are going. See what fish is there to what bait you want to use.

Love beach casting, but live as far away from sea as poss in UK.(minus 5 miles). Because of this all my gear is telescopic. 3 rods and a rod stand fit nicely on parcel shelf and small tool box for tackle in footwell of my son. Makes it alot easier to take on family holiday or work trip.

Didn't pay a fortune for gear, last time fishing I was next to a flash harry with lovely gear, bite alarms everything shiny, he never caught a thing, I caught a bass(too small to keep) 2 mackrel, 1 plaice and a dab. Made me smile.

Echo other post expect to lose gear, always research good spots, and best local bait shop, always find them most helpful.

This is the Gods honest truth I have never caught a bass . Eaten plenty but not caught by me . The last time I went boat fishing my mate next to me got into something just as I did . He pulled up a really nice size bass and I pulled up an equally nice black bream . Caught shed loads of bream why was it not me that caught the bass !!! ???

Caught a massive ray last boat trip I did. Caught a few small bass on beach but only ever 1 keeper.no shame in a bream, a very underated fish that imo eats as well as a bass.

My favourite fish to eat is fresh mackrel. Love casting with feathers when there running. It can get so frantic you can fill a bucket in a hour!:)

Too right Jon, try taking few limes, chilli , salt and pepper along and make ceviche. Just soak the raw mackrel, skinned and sliced in seasoned lime juice and chilli till it looks cooked. No need for bbq and delicious with salad and bread.
