I guess this may be a bit of a newb question, Im definately not a mechanic either.

The handbrake on my nissan nivana tipper aint the best, adjusted the cable so the lever pulls up a few clicks, but even after I pull it as high as I can, it doesnt hold the truck on hills, even slight hills, do I need to replace the brake shoes? or adjust them?

thanks in advance

I think you will need to slacken the hand brake adjustment off again then adjust the shoes on each wheel through the back of the drum . There is a rubber bung . take it out and turn the " star " wheel with a flat blade screw diver until you feel the wheel drag ( back jacked up forgot to say ) then back it off a click . Do the same on the other side . Then re adjust the hand brake .

I had a Navara 04 model, in the rear drum there is a pivot for the hand brake on the inside of the rubber boot at the back of the drum and another inside the drum at the bottom .

On mine both were guilty of seizing up causing a **** hand brake . This may explain why tightening the cable did no good , you could of course just need new brake shoes .

Have the brakes checked by some you know not some like KWIKFIT

If they are drums remove and check that you are not near rivets or near the metal if you are, replace and adjust every thing back.

slacken hand brake cable adjust the shoes

When you replace the drums or pads start up and stamp on the brakes this equalises every thing then adjust hand brake cable
