How so? FC (and most landowners) would want paying a fair bit for the standing timber if it's decent firewood. I'm pretty sure that's how forestry works on the whole......

 

Doing the work in return for the timber is usually a way of the landowner getting an unmanaged woodland back into rotation without costing them anything so that the next thin will stand better chance of generating a return on the investment of planting it in the first place.

Timber or decent firewood I could understand but the guy I worked for was only getting small stuff. Like I said it's ok doing bits & pieces for private landowners but in my experience the FC are tight enough as it is.

If the (presumably well off) owner of this 20 acre wood (tax reasons no doubt) would 'like it managed' then he can bloody well pay for it as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps a slight discount for the wood.

 

If you're looking for the wood to sell then you can buy timber standing, drop the tree, then just take the timber and mash up the brash a bit. A lot less hassle.

 

You'll get a lifestyle out of mucking about with faggots and charcoal. But not a living.
