Was using a 16mm Marlow braid rope today, it was nice, new and soft and flexible, after I had finished using it, (heavy loads but minimal shock loading) It had turned a little stiff, like wire.

Is this normal or have I killed a brand new rope, (not mine) I have used Marlow braid before and it seems to be able to take hard work pretty well.

Yes I know It's three strand with a braided cover.

Well if I didn't kill the rope yesterday I made sure of it today, big heavy Beech, not letting the load run equals rope kaput.

Check out the whipping on the sling.

Not my rope Peter not that that is an excuse but it is only the second lowering rope I have ever broken, the first being made of Manila snapped lowering a large chunk of Euc in Oz.

Do you think the splice pulled out a bit causing the whipping to come undone or was it the friction of the choker on the ouside of the whipping that caused it to undo? if you get what I mean.

And will the sling be retired.

Oh and was it the groundies fault or the lowering devices fault?

I think the splice pulled out breaking the whipping but I am no expert on these matters, yes I think that the sling should be withdrawn from service.

It was my fault, should have had bigger lowering equipment really.

Should it not of been lock stitched to prevent the movement? is the whipping just for decoration or is it structural?

i think:confused1: that the whipping is there just to mkae doubely sure that the splice wont come undone.
