hydraulic oil question

10w30 is universal oil, you can run it in engines or tractor backends etc so should be fine

It's attitudes like that which nearly cost me a new Merc hydraulic pump. My mb trac went in for a clutch change at a well known unimog dealer. Got the tractor back with hydraulics not working and confused with time on the bill for sorting out hydraulics. Could not understand as hydraulics where fine when it went in. Turns out Merc pump requires super thin like water hydraulic 10 oil not the thick stuff they put in. So after draining and refilling with 50ltrs it saved £800 on a new pump.

Pretty interesting post, lots of different opinions. I would be inclined to follow manufacturers guidelines though. If their engineers recommend a certain type of oil i would imagine its for good reason.
