D'oh, Tilia was my 1st call, then I thought it didnt look right.

And no Tim, not Quercus.

 

A clue for mine, it's a native of China, grows to around 65feet. The leaves are bright green witha downy underside. Ornamental.

 

All wrong so far,bless you so I'll pop in another clue...

This tree has a few common names,and an unusual flower. The trunk in the pic is from a very mature specimen, I havent seen another as mature as this.

Heres a couple from where i have been working on and off for a while now- The second two (both the same tree) stumped us for a long time, and two guys from Kew, which was a bit embarrassing when we found out what it actually was. Suffice to say that both trees are among the first examples of each species brought into the country!

Second two - Tsuga heterophylla?
