ideas wanted on making cutting table

I want to cut some timber up into logs with my chainsaw as quickly as possible

idea is to stack all the timber up in one go and then cut the lot in one go

any ideas on what I can make up for nothing like using tree branches

There's been a few threads on making a wooden version of something like the buckingham wood station - sounds like you're wanting t do similar.

 

I made somehing along those lines out of a load of old fencing rails and it works really well on billets and small diameter poles ( though watch out for the top one' spinning and gettign thrown as yo make a start).

 

Search for sawhorses and they usually make their way into a thread - some good pics too. Think RobD made a huge one.

This is what we use.

 

The center is an old railway sleeper and the uprights could be anything really. If only working in one place you could just hammer some straight poles into the ground at the appropriate spacing and off you go.

We use a sawhorse similar to that but made out of 3" fencposts and some 6x2 rails - it holds about a cubic metre of logs and the posts are at 500mm centres to suit our woodburner - beats cutting them one or two at a time for sure!

and how wide did you make the frame in relation to your saw

I just hit the railway sleeper. Yes it gets damaged but it cost me next to nothing and will take many years before it needs replacing as once it gets cut a bit you hit it less with the saw. As for the width I it is an old sleeper and I think 12" wide most more modern ones I have seen are narrower. I use my MS 460 with 25" bar. A 20" bar would be OK but I have used my 346XP with and 18" and when the wood is a bit twisted and sticks out form the sides it was not long enough.

Here's a really basic one I made from a few branches (just messing about)

 

And a more sustainable one that can be moved around the yard (A couple of 6x2 and 2x2 screwed together).
