Cutting & Shaping a Large Conifer Tree

My neighbour has a large conifer tree which they have agreed to have reduced in height by 10ft as it sits very close to our property.

The tree has now been cut but my neighbour is worried that the tree needs to be shaped otherwise the branches will just grow outwards and not upwards.

Is this true, do you need to shape the branches so they will grow upwards?

Any help would be great.

It'll always grow more up than out, the remaining outer crown will now rocket away with several dominant vertical leaders.

if you trim it now it will look tidier and you could possibly reduce the width by 1-2 ft

Yep, Kev's got it pretty much nailed.

Yeah, not what i`d want near my house.Cant see the attraction in them unless you want a thick fast growing hedge that you plan to keep under control.

Looks like a tatty guardsmans bearskin.

The old boy next door had an out of contol connie, complete with burst plant pot around the base.It interfered with our sky dish.He had it trimmed a few times, but my mrs mentioned that he was around it with a bow saw one day.Quick as a flash i went round and had it away.Even ringed up some logs for him.Free of charge, as i dont think he could aford to have it done.

Suited me so no probs.
