Try simulating a fall with the wirestrop/mainline set up described. It will do wonders for your confidence and will soon have you removing those pegs! Falling onto a peg will hurt much more than the slight rubbing you will get from the main stem.

I know what you mean though. Bought some carbonfibre; I think, spikes, always forget the make, they are great but very bulky under the boot, the old ones fitted snuggle into the heel, and didn't feel so clumbersome when climbing around the tree. But were god awful after few hours. Chogging is normally a 15-20ft stem, or few, and doesn't seem worth coming down for spikes.

Check out a youtube video by Eric frei called lanyard techniques basically illustrates the use of a running bowline with soft locked figure 8 ect im no expert but it gave me some ideas to try next time i have the chance (still new to climbing/apprentice)

Yeah so have i quite a common word i guess in arb circles chop plus log makes sense!

Instead of fan ting around with a locked f8. I use a rope wrench if it a fat stem. Cinch it to the stem with a long tail and the bailout option is there.

 

On most trees I just use a large ropeguide and set that below my flip line and the bail out option is there again.

I use a sling chocked around the tree with a caribiner and the climbing line through it and keep it under the flipline. Works for me

I know of a lad from Bedford who only used his strop and he chogged a section out lent forward and when he lent back his flipline came over the top of the stem he fell 50 ft onto a brick wall and broke his back. !! Lived though and can still walk
