great little saw here, probably a bit overpriced but the dealer selling it is legit, even though the 023 was part of Stihl's hobby/garden range it's a capable little saw. There's a crack in the rear hand guard but some araldite will sort that - give them a call and ask them if they'll do it for £100?

STIHL CHAINSAW 023 SECOND HAND | eBay

We've had a 023 for 13 years that sits behind the chipper for cutting off small stubs and side branches, it just refuses to die.

Yes and the second hand saw I bough before broke so I have decided to go for a new one

You can't compare something you bought blind without advice on Ebay to buying a decent brand second-hand saw from somebody like Spud who can give you good, honest advice about what you need. :001_rolleyes:

If you are really tight for cash and want some peace of mind go to your local Argos store and buy one of their petrol saws usually under £100, then take out their 3 year warranty. Use it till it breaks down (which it will) then go back and get another for free under the warranty take out the insurance again and off you go.

Do you think this would fit the bill?

Buy Qualcast QG-PT3043 Petrol Chainsaw - 46cc at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Chainsaws.

everyone keeps saying that these cheepo saws are underpowered and unsafe, why?

if the saw is underpowered would the engine stall when cutting through a big log?

el cheepo chinese saws... by and large the engines are copies of 25+yr old japanese designs. they were not first rate designs even then.

they produce poor power for the engine displacement, and are usually equipped with larger bars than would be recommended (20" bar even on a 50cc top of the line pro saw will be fairly pedestrian in pace).

to try and make up for their lack of performance users tend to lean on them more, waggle them about and generally run them like a farmer. their low quality ill fitting chinese parts will not take this abuse and they fall to bits in short order (possibly causing injury to the user).

if you have very low expectations of cutting speed, and treat them like they are made of paper mache, use a quality chain and keep it razor sharp... then you may get a few years of firewood out of one.

Yes thats the type of thing, still chinese and still poor quality but will be repaired/replaced for free for the first year and then replaced anytime after that for £20 for up to 3 years. I had one years ago got 2 replacements in the 3 years and just before the warranty ran out I allowed I would get a new one but when I went in they had none so gave me a full refund of the original purchase price. Unbelievable.
