Hi guys, Im not recommending everybody switches to using waste oil as as Im sure nobody wants. If I was using my chainsaws for my job i could factor in the cost of chain oil and it wouldnt be an issue, however im only cutting firewood in an attempt to save money.

But anyway I just wanted to pick up on a point raised and want you to consider something for a second.

If engine oil even after 10k miles is good enough to lubricate the crankshaft bearings of a high performance diesel engine running up to 5000 rpm and often under severe load and better still the bearings in the turbo charger at speeds in excess of 100,000 rpm surley it is more than adequate to lubricate the bar of a chainsaw.

As for damaging an oil pump i doubt it. I have ran an 020 stihl for 8 years on waste oil and never needed to replace a pump. But if it ever did a new oil pump is about the same price as a gallon of oil which would be used in a couple of days.

When I worked at a Stihl main dealers we had a guy using old engine to lube his bar and chain. The oil pump failed on his new Stihl within 2 weeks! Metal fillings had become stuck in the plastic parts of the pump and just wore it away. Chain oil pumps are only designed to use clean oil.

Being a careful thrifty Co Antrim/ Co Cavan bred farmers son.

I always have used Stihl red 2 stroke

plus "boggo" standard chainsaw chain oil.

For hobby use the extra cost is infintesimal.

(and my sproket has lasted for ever, well since 1997)

Since one has to pay at the pump for unleaded.

Burns noticeably cleaner than the stihl red two stroke.. I was using aspen in the hedge cutters but since using the hp have found no need.

Running bio oil from clarks when I have time to order it!! Big fan of bio chain oils , nothing worse than creating oil slicks on a customers koi pond...Also breathing in oil vapour off chains i would rather it was veg oil.. i have noticed i dont get ill as much! I would try the tesco veg oil but I'm convinced saw bars need the tacking agent to lubricate properly.

Running Stihl hp is better than standard oil but you still have all the bad stuff from the petrol. Did you know pump fuel is made from over 100 ingredients but Aspen is made from only 10. Pump fuel is classed as toxic and aspen is only classed harmful.

in responds to veg oil, I converted to it say 8/10 ish months ago...

Never had a prob with oil pumps, bars burning/blueing, chains have been wearing ok, and I can lick up the spills, oh and its £1 a litre chain oils are £2/3 a litre,

I have no probs using it, from climbing saw up to 30" on 660,

Also its easy to clean maintain saws when using beg oil as its so clean

Josh.
