The harness was designed with the rings as a crucial component. Why would you want to change it to something that won't fit the bill as well? The pear shaped mallion still needs to be loaded along its major axis to be strong. Where the ring works in any direction.

I've never had an issue with the ones on mine. I have changed the bridge out to a piece of rope that's a bit longer. Makes it a bit nicer to use. But i wouldn't want to go changing hardware.

Dude, climb how you like.

That said, nobody will tell you that this is a great idea because you want to change something neat, light and specifically designed for the job for something big heavy and general purpose. Then you want to stick some more jangly hardware in and attach a clunky gear heavy climbing system to it.

It'll work and it won't be any less 'safe' but generally arb climbers tend to like minimal, simple systems. They're robust, trusted and there's less to go wrong or get in the way.

Cheers Tony, like I said, I'm just climbing for fun and am a tinkerer so weight and janglyness ( :0) ) rant an issue for me, I just wanted to check I wasn't making a obvious mistake that could make it unsafe.

I saw some ppl using screw shackles instead of rings which scared the crap out of me, at least the maillons won't have anything touching the opening.

The harness was made with the webbing bit you feel safe changing that!

The maillon would be loaded correctly, I'm not 100% that the ring is as strong in every orientation, it has a join after all with a small screw!

I deemed mine as well worn before I changed it. A piece of rope was a good alternative. Makes it a bit like the treemotion.

With the screw in its strong. It's rated as a second set of side Ds.

How can you load something correctly when it's being pulled in 4 directions?
