I say why not.

A good mentality to have. It's great to question things.

But, i think you would find tree climbing alot more enjoyable using more 'traditional' techniques and equipment.

The best thing for you to do is see if there's a rec climb being organised near you this summer (no doubt there will be).

You will get a much better understanding from seeing different systems in the flesh.

I'm sure ill experiment, I've got friends who tree climb on traditional kit and will and have give it a go, half the fun for me is playing around seeing what i can put together to do different stuff on.

Just coz I'm in a tree doesn't mean I can't try different techniques and styles, every anchor is an anchor :0)

i have a heavily modded sequoia, and it goes through loler everytime, doubled on bridges, i had a small rigging plate on there etc, also different types of rings, can run any combination dependant upon the job, use your imagination and enjoy, thats the problem the others have, they cant imagine

I couldn't imagine that setup in anything other than up and down climbing. I would hate to see the stress that setup would go through even on a tiny dead wood. That is why the bridge is a textile so it can twist and bend with out putting anything under stress. That is how the zigzag failed, the biner turning and levering the eye under weight. IMO you've turned what is an excellent harness into something that is way less versatile than what it is

The bridge is textile to aid tip work and manouverabilty due to its ability to flex into a comfortable position. Drsteeve has already made clear his needs are not like ours, replacing the rings with mallions common sense would say he has probably doubled the strength of this part as the originals are only rated to 15kn and at a guess the mallions loaded on axis will be 24kn at least. He has used the original bridge with a rigging pawl again on some harnesses this is a standard feature and a rigging pawl has a very good strength along multiple axis.

The zig zag failed because it was a big oversight on Petzls behalf and not over engineered enough for the scenarios it was used in.

The harness mods in principle look sound to me for his needs which are not in a commercial application.

As for the Petzl I'd well ok maybe this is the weak point in the system it's not designed to be used in a situation where slack can occur, it's designed to allow rope to be placed into the device whilst it is on your harness, there is a chance of cross loading the plastic gate which could fail and the device will open...

Hence why I'd like to see Steve use a hitch climber.

Imagination is good, but it's got to be practical at the same time, which 95 percent of the people that have commented on this think its is not.Loler has nothing to do with how a system works together, its all about equipment safety and making sure each component is safe in it's own right.

It's got to be practical if YOU are going to use it, I can do whatever I want, I'm not hurting anyone, not even myself!

Maybe my ideas are **** for everyone, maybe they work for someone, who knows, not me, not you!

If someone is doing something that will put them in danger, comment.

If someone asks if something is a good idea, comment.

If someone is just putting something out there for others to look at and think about but doesn't ask you to rip it to shreds, maybe keep it zipped.
