i'm sure it's the case that there are, maybe ten to fifteen units, i completed the one day course and got three units. Signing, Lighting and Guarding. my foreman at the time got these three plus monitoring. i think if you get all of them, then you are supremo daddy of traffic management (you can do all the motorway stuff), a bit like having CS30 and 31 or all of the CS units.

I doubt if you would be held culpable for an accident having barely any experience of tm. i used to work on county council contracts, and we had a few collisions near our sites and the police always said it was driver error. if you do it correctly then how can you go wrong?? and that is, after all, what training is. teaching you to do a job properly. would you refuse CS 41 for fear of cutting through your rope and dropping something on a greenhouse? it could happen, but that's why you get training.

I have Chapter 8 for work. However we can't just set the stuff as we like, Our supervisor has chap 10, he does site surveys risk assesments and a plan of the work area we then put it up to the plans etc.

We have the old people at work how were described as "wiser" the are the muppets that hate change don't like showing newbies what to do, won't wear new uniform, moan about vehicles etcetc our boss has a very low oppinion of them.

Becarefull refusing courses at the moment your gaffer could soon find someone willing to do the job who already has the ticket!

As has already been said having chapter 8 could mean the difference between having a job or popping down to the local dole office every fortnight:thumbdown:. Also if you go for a position at another firm and there are two lads including yourself who have the same amount of experience but the other lad has chapter eight, who would the employer probably choose?

us old muppet do like changes but within reason, as to finding work any donut can get a ticket, tickets dont mean sob all

Dodger sorry if you thought I was making out you were a muppet thats the trouble with posting at 6am.

The point I was trying to make is you'll find in actual fact that the buck stops with the person with the supervisors ticket unit 10 if the operatives that hold 8 have carried out everything to his plan.

Chapter 8 holder can only be hold responsable if they have actually failed to carryout thier duties in accordance with the rules/tm plan.

ok

lots of firms only have the chapter 8 and they dont need unit 10 to supervisors unit 8 lop hole around it, but there many newbies groundmen that have unit 8 after only a days training, were our concern are if this newies bloke was working on a busy road and say put out 30 mph cones on a 6o mph road any accidents he resonable and he will be sue for damages, not the firm.

lot of big firms have done this knowing the people that have unit 8 will take the rap if anything goes wrong even man slaughter charges. it taken all the resonabiltys of the directors to the poor sod that have chapter 8, not saying all firms would do this but it can happen

Chapter 8 refers to chapter 8 of the highways manuel, a very very very thick document, there are all sorts of regs, and rules to do with working on the road new road street works act, street works act, street works supervisors regs tonnesssssssss

to meet these rules depending on what exactly it is you do you will ether have to qualify under the units 1 to 15 i think that cover things like putting out signes supervising avoiding cabels in fill etc a lot of tree guys do unit 7 signing lighting and gaurding but the regs say that a unit 10 supervisor should have ownership of tha tjob, to complicate things a little further tree work does not strickly fall under street works and may also sit under a differant scheme that has differant numbers and a differeant sector skills council, dont have ref to hand but if you like i can look it up
