I have a willow to remove next week, it has seven or eight main trunks about 9" to 14" diameter, also have a family friend wants me to knock up a table for them, doesn't need to be a solid piece top and colour isn't important, they just want something bespoke:001_huh:, does willow mill ok, does it look any good, whats the seasoning timescale for 2" boards, is it prone to severe splitting/warping, in short is it worth milling?

Willow is a lot better than most people give it credit for.

 

It is not durable outside so bear that in mind. It is also quite pale with very little grain, so you would need the design to make the piece special, rather than relying on the timber, but it is quite well behaved in seasoning, dries fairly quickly (give it a year and it will be dry enough to work) and it is quite light which is a good thing when it comes to moving it!

 

When milling, think about your leg design as you may want to make some thicker sections (3" or 4"). I think I would be inclined to make the top from a series of planks butterfly-jointed together with a contrasting colour such as walnut or a nice dark piece of brown oak. I would use Danish oil as a finish, as willow is not very hard so something which will move a bit with any marks would be good.

I managed to get my hand on a elm log that had been cut down two years ago it was just over 6 foot long and 25" one end an 21" the other it was intresting getting it out the van and down to drive to the garage lol. I got 15" wide Hartwood boards out of it I cut a mantle beam at 6" and the the rest of it at just over 2". I still need to move the wood out the way and with stickers in. Iv now cut all the Logs i have so nows a good time to finish the mill off and get it sprayed. Thanks for reading.

Had a good day today milling ash and sycamore 22 boards in all.hopefully will manage to mill the rest tomorrow.
