Does seem a odd time of year for wildfires, firefighters were tackling one on Ashdown Forest last night as well.

We usually get this type of thing after prolonged dry spells and it usually involves large areas of grassland and whins.

It was a series of controlled burns that got out of control. Ground is incredibly dry in the west at the moment due to a dry spell and the strong easterly winds recently.

just suprised its been dry enough after the winter we've had this year, particularly Fort William

Anywhere where there is thick grass and whins or where heather/whin burning gets out of control!

Nothing unusual at this time of year. Burning heather on the hill to encourage fresh growth. You sometimes find people get a bit over-enthusiastic or it's not uncommon for someone to drop a match for a bit of a laugh.

 

Todays job is clearing the last few clumps of plantation to reinstate a grouse moor. Method: 1. Cut fire break around plantation. 2. Light it. 3. Go back with mulcher to trash the remaining trunks to remove perches for crows etc.

We've cleared approx 800 acres this way in the last 3 years.

No rain in Fort William for 5 weeks!

 

We only had 24mm in March, oh and about 5 feet of snow!!!!
