I think it's more to do with the amounts of noise they let in. CE marks are there for a reason mark, not just on climbing equipment.

That seems odd, surely the Sordin unit is already CE marked and the pad and body is the same ,they must have just removed a bit of 'muff' to get the ear piece in. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. iPods go louder.... :laugh1:

Haha:)

I'm not losing sleep over it. But I think if you start messing about with something that has a ce mark it sort of loses that ce rating. As you said tho, iPods gp louder ;)

Ok, in radios if they are not CE marked, they are possibly using cheaper Chinese parts, these send out harmonics that can interfere with other frequencies, such as Emergency Services and so on. CE approval ascertains that no interference occurs. One cheap Chinese radio was found to have a 2nd harmonic with the shipping distress frequency, not nice if you in the doo doo and hoping for rescue.

Buying a reputable brand such as Midland will be fine. I haven't tried the Stein gear, as it isn't compatible with my pro gear (Motorola on 449) 446 is too active with kids for professional use IMO in my area.

we have a pair, they work fine. havent used them as often as i thought we would.

ear muff a bit uncomfortable with speaker in (but could probably be set better) .my climbers dont like the wires and extra stuff to get snagged so they prefer to just use whistles and shout like they always have.

had to use last week ,3 rockbreakers working nearby.

I would stay away from anything on 446 unless your out in the wilds, the last thing you want is kids chatting away when your thinking about where to put your next hold. Lots of good radios about s/h on ebay but down to knowing what you want and how much time your want to spend trying to win.

But to answer your original Q on Stein PTT, sorry I never used one but at that price I would modify my own headset & insert a speaker etc, easy job not rocket science but takes time maybe not everyone has.

I have used small Alan 446r in the past, fit nicely in pocket with good results as long as you use it coded so kids dont chat in your earhole & parts available in Maplin, cheap enough if the speaker boom breaks you can replace but easy to adapt and make it more climber friendly.

Good luck
