just to go back to the original question of this thread, cordial wood is probably a slight miss spelling and most likely refers to ziricote for which the botanical name is (cordia dodecandra). a relative of this is freijo (cordia goeldiana) which also has the common name of cordia wood. it is most probable that either of these two exotic timbers that the friend means in this instance.

if i had a picture then i could almost cirtanly I.D. it no problem...

The picture is'nt great but i've now seen it on the ibanez website and can confirm that it isnt ziricote. it looks very much like either the freijo timber or its brother bocote. if it was bocote most luthiers would state it as being just that and it hasn't quite got the look of bocote either so i'm going to say that i'm 99% certain that it's freijo (cordia goeldiana) this also has the common names of Cordia wood and rather strangely, Jenny wood...

it grows in the forests of the amazon basin brazil and can reach 6ft tall with a trunk diameter of 18-24".

widely used as a general all round timber in it's native regions...

hope this helps,

Steve

Apologies for the slight derail, but the thread reminded me of a great friend of mine who was killed in a bike crash nearly 4 years ago. He was the reason I met my wife...

Anyway, he also made guitars (and furniture, I'll see if I can find a picture, it was amazing).
