I really want to start climbing trees with ropes and was wondering what equipment I need to buy and if a can buy it second hand for around 100 quid.

I can buy rock a rock climbing harness, carabinier, belay device and 30m of rope for £90.

What should I do?

Thanks

Jack

I would avoid second hand kit. And avoid rock climbing gear. It's not fit for purpose and can't make life easy. I know people have used it in the past and got on with it but that's my 2pence worth.

An inexpensive way in Jack is a harness like a Petzl Avao or Navaho, a hitch climber kit and a plain ended rope, splices add money.

Navaho harness...

Aeris is pretty cheap and seems to be OK for both SRT & DDRT, not to mention mechanicals, so a good all round rope....

And hitch climber kit.... [8mm cord on 11mm rope]

HitchClimber Friction Hitch System

You'll need a lanyard, which you can make up yourself cheap enough with a couple of lengths of cord and 2 biners, plus a pulley if you're so inclined and you'll want a cambium saver, but there's no reason why you couldn't make up an adjustable one yourself as well, or even a pulley saver for a few quid, and a throwline is always handy....

Why complicate things, cheap harness, 4 carabiners 2 prusicks and a cheap rope.

A perfectly good vt setup can be purchased for less than the price of a hitchclimber. The treemagineers must be laughing their way to the bank with all the advertising from you guys who seem to think its the only setup

Only issue I see with that is that the Navaho harness with it's single ventral ring makes it a bit tight with 2 carabiners, I really like the single attachment point arrangement of the hc or sky walker pulley...

You don't need 2 carabiners, a dmm boa is large enough

The other point is that he is a beginner, start at the beginning, learn the basics and advance when ability allows, he doesn't have to be a srtwpblahblahblah convert from the word go
