Had to fell a lime suffering from the Ustulina last week, the original spec was to reduce the tree by no more than 10% of crown,(tpo/con area) but while cleaning the basal epicormic growth away, it unveiled the fungi. Called out the TO who confirmed and condemned the tree instantly, as there were houses and pathways in the target area. fortunately, it was in quite a well-covered area, so one tree lost didnt show too badly.

Got any pictures of the decay caused by ustulina?

Andy, have you still got access to the timber for a picture or two?

I felled a beech this week, had at least two decay fungi at work. There was a large area of discolouration in the wood, and the very centre of the stem was badly decayed. There will be pics to follow.

Some causing quite a bit of damage on a Sorbus Aria today, short stem with 4 or 5 substantial branches breaking out in first 5 foot, the decay ran into each of the branches.

Not great pics, but here they are. 2nd pic is a cross section at about 3 foot high, at ground level there was only good wood on one side of ring.
