its all relative, its not as good as a tirfor thats right but a tirfor is not as good as a 10 ton double drum igland and on and on...... its fine if you use it within its capabilities and they are about £20, get one an keep it in the van with a couple of slings and a length of old rope :thumbup1:

Your spot on Robert, thanks. I think I am pretty good at judging the quality of tools so I'm going to ask to see one before I buy, but you have given me the answer and reassurance I was seeking for the tasks in hand. :thumbup1:

Tirfors are great. The wee "Tirfor type" copies are pretty good too, not quite as robust as the genuine article, but good value for money, and seem to punch well above their weight (as it were). If I read it right you're looking at an outlay of about £30 for the wire puller, I would have thought for that money it's well worth a punt. I've only used one once, and to be honest it wasn't much cop, but for £30 I would consider adding one to the tool box, it's light as a feather and, like everything else, once you've got it you'll find a use for it.

I have that exact winch it lives in my van and has rescued the van (fiat scudo not so much stuck but ran out of traction) a couple of times when I have taken it a bit to far off road. Also used it to pull down hang ups in tight coppice wood, pull out small (shrub size) stumps and tension short runs of stock fencing around the farm. For the money I wouldn't be without mine
