Notice how it rips down the stem on the 1st and 2nd shot, will do side cuts under the hinge next time.

 

Always put your side cuts above the hinge, best bit of advice i have ever been given.

I've never put side cuts above the hinge and never will as I dont like losing good hinge wood.

if i am doing stuff with soft bark i always put in ' rip/tear cuts' thats what i call them, just in enough to cut the bark, saves it ripping down, wont mess up the hinge.:001_smile:

Always on top for me it serves the same purpose, but with zero chance of snagging your saw with as far as i know no effect in hinge either as wether its above or below make no differrence what so ever your still making a side cut it just safer.

 

Its horses for course anyway.
