Posting this on here instead of a land rover forum because i want advice not 1000 opinions LOL

I've had my Discovery down in a quarry today, i've thoroughly washed all the sand and mud off but i have a horrific vibration from the front end felt through the steering wheel.

It starts at 40 mph backs of at 50 mph and comes in good and proper and makes the whole vehicle shake around 60 mph.

Underneath it's virtually identical to a defender so all advise welcome.

I'm thinking i've damaged the panhard rod ?

Right we seriously need to get to the bottom of this or I aint gonna sleep tonite. Lets retrace your steps and see if we cant figure something out. Soo, to start with : what where you exactly doing in the quarry???

Operating a shredder just drove in and drove out later in the day, hard ground covered with sloshy sandy mud which was hard in places due to the heavy frost here last night.

I noticed the vibration within minutes of hitting the highway and assumed it was thick mud stuck on the wheel rims as per previous experience. I'm a bit perplexed as after washing it i assumed things would improve.

No major bangs or whacks in the quarry so i doubt it's the propshaft, i had a similar problem but not as bad on an old 300tdi 130 and it was a loose panhard rod so that will be the first thing i check in the light.

Has the vibration gotten worse?

Seems strange that the vibration comes in at a certain speed, then goes away only to appear again.

Can you take off the rear drive shaft in your Shed, jack up the front and run it to have a look?If you take off the front wheels then you'll have plenty of room.

Take the front shaft off.Engage difflock and still take it to Manchester.:001_smile:

Buzz - had exactly the same thing on my old discovery...

With mine it was the prop shaft, it went on vibrating for ages just as you describe and then bang she went!

Good new is, if it's the rear prop you will still be able to drive the vehicle if it goes, even if it's only to the garage.

Another one I had on the disco that caused vibration was the steering damper, caught a rock one day on the hill and that upset it.

definately sounds like something stuck on the inside of a wheel. If you are sure you haven't hit anything then you won't have bent anything, it could be a loose panhard but why would it have come loose if you have only been through sloppy clay?

Time to go outside with a torch and check all the wheels carefully I think.

your propshaft may not be buggered, could just be the propshaft bearings which alot cheaper than the entire propshaft being screwed. Ive never known it to effect the steering or feel vibration through the steering though.

The more i think on it, the more i less suspect it to be the propshaft.
