So would the logical evolution of this be a grapple with a saw? Harvester head type. Smaller pieces but no climbing.

I've worked with just that, 25m hiab style crane with a jib, harvester head, not as great as it sounds

Give it another 10 years mate, it will seem much better then:laugh1:

Haha, I reckon James's is better, can balance the picks, and not limited to the cut diameter.... Big ladder, 66, stand in the main forks and cut away:biggrin:

Never said it was fast, its quite slow, and i can proberly do it faster than the crane, they invested in it tho and it has payed for itself so.

There was a competitor who bought one for their crane which had a flyjib on it, the flyjib having a smaller boom, on the first job they did he picked too large a branch and the whole boom on the jib twisted to uselessness. whoops.

I don't know if I like the idea of a grab on a crane being as reliable as chains and slings... I've had leaning trees I have Tryed to fell with a timber grab slip out.

The only way anything is slipping out of that thing once its closed is if the grab itself breaks its arms or cylinders, unless your only holding on with the tips of the arms nothings comming outta that. If you blow a hose the grab will stay locked aswell.
