Just posted this to the Scotland group:

"I was thinking that it would be nice to have some sort of get together this year. As these things take time to organise and people are busy I thought I'd raise the issue now.

I was thinking of maybe a day climbing somewhere where there are some good trees followed by a few beers. It woud be nice to get together and swap ideas climbing tips and techniques and a few stories so I'll be looking out for a venue and will keep you posted. I was thinking of some time in spring or early summer."

Any non group members / non posters / lurckers please join if interested everyone's welcome.:001_smile:

The scottish branch of the arb assocciation run something ever year along the same lines maybe you could combine it with them. Paul Hanson from Aboretum International usually organises it

Hi Guys,

Id be keen to do some recreational climbing with you guys. Get some practice in.

Im into Scotland regularly and got relatives near Berwick to visit too.

Not sure if botanics would allow but How about a large estate somewhere? Camperdown park in Dundee?

Insurance is always going to be an issue in this day and age, most big estates are going to run a mile if you ring up asking if you and 20 mates can climb their trees. However I do have a couple of options which may get round these issues. This is why I've suggested this so early in the year, hopefully we'll have time to organise something pretty good.

As for the AA meet any AA member is welcome anyway so this can be an Arbtalk meet and we'll keep it separate. The AA meets have a bit too much emphasis on free labour where as I was thinking of a more casual day out .

The Arb officer in Dundee (Eric Hamilton) is the past chair of the Scottish Arb Assoc. so we might be able to swing something in Dundee District.

The Duke of Buccleuch might also be welcoming at Drumlanrig (D&G) I also personally know the factor there.

Give me notice and Ill be there. We might also be able to set up regular meets as discussion group and invite speakers in.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have arranged a venue which we can use, this does not have to be the definitive arrangement and if any one else has a suitable place please let us know.

The venus is Abbey St Bathans estate in Berwickshire, this place is fairly heavily wooded and should provide ample opportunity for some good climbing. There is a lot of ancient oak woodland on the estate much of it growing on very poor soil so the trees are small and stunted. In the valley bottoms there are some larger trees with some broadleaves in the 70 - 90 foot range though nothing massive. Should there be enough 4x4's available on the day there are a couple of pretty ancient 100 foot+ silver firs which can be accesed by driving through the river and allong a track.

The downside of this venue is its non central location, on the plus side we would be allowed to camp on site and have Bar b q etc. there is also a sweedish woodfired hot tub in the camping field ( trunks only, no mankinis allowed lol).

Willie Dobie the owner of the estate has agreed to allow this on the basis that we have a play with some of his Logosol chainsaw mills ( he is the importer) which I think is fair enough, especially if we are there for a day and a half.

Any way, your feedback on this is welcome.:001_smile:
