Ms261 clutch spring? Easy to replace?

My 261 ( first batch boo hiss!!) pinged a spring today and I was wondering how easy/hard they are to change for an amateur?

 

I heard a clunk and then the saw cut out. Also melted the stupid plastic needle bearing ffs.

Get a pack of 3 and replace all of them bud, is it easy, i did it a couple of months ago for the first time. I used a pair of needle nosed pilers and didnt have a problem. 5-10min job

By the way yes it's farely easy to do. Takes longer to get the clutch off than change the springs.

Sounds like you're sorted, my other half has a 261 and says his clutch springs are very easy to replace, the husky (my'n) on the other hand is another matter! I take it to a local place and they do it as it is easier! We argue a lot about which is the best, Husky or Sthill, but on this one I'd say the Sthill seems much easier to change clutch springs on and he is right!

It depends on the model on both saws. Stihl generally use hooked end traditional springs - you have the inboard and outboard models.

 

On Huskys you can have the long single spring type, the flat spring type like on the 346/357 etc and then the same ones as many Stihls - some are inboard some outboard.

 

Some clutches are bitches to remove, some are easy - I guess the Stihl ones are very generally easier to replace!

 

Is it easy? Depends on how good you are but remember clockwise to remove!

Thanks for the offer Rich but if its simple enough Ill have a go. Vaugely remember being shown on my cs30 and Ill have another read of the workshop manual Might research the updated clutch and see if its worth swapping the whole thing.

very easy, what you do is put the saw on the ground. put the spring on top, and then hit it as hard as you can with the biggest hammer you can find

joking aside ther are quite easy to replace but my i recomend buying a bucket load of them

Well I did it yesterday after having to return to the dealer for a clutch retaining clip, which hadn't broken recently by the look of it. I had it running all day untill the (NEW!!!!!) needle bearing gave up.

Did you grease the new needle bearing by any chance???

Yep I do regularly. I use an Oregon bearing grease. Is that not reccomended then?
