I run the Multi tip on my little predator and i reckon the 252 would be great with that system. The teeth on Vermeers machine were not brand new but not blunt by any means. that yew stump was rock hard and it was definitely easier than swinging a pedestrian one about. I was impressed.

Other ones now to try are:

Bandit 2250

Predator 28/38m

Carlton 4012 NP

Have you looked at the FSI D30/470. great little grinder?

When I started my business in 2000 the first machine I got was a 252. Good machine but times have moved on but the 252 hasn't, retired it in 2005 for a bandit 2900t. Now have a bandit 2250 as well. Well built the cutting sweep is excellent, on belts, bearings and one of the good things about it is the engine is sat on the back of the machine not on top. The 252 is easy to rollover, yes ok you can put dual wheels on but then it not 35", eats bearings and where the engine is on the top it's up and down oil to the front then oil to the back the engines don't last that long nomally the back piston goes. had three engines on my machine. With the 252 if the teeth are slightly dull will bounce or drag the machine into the root. The 2250 does not bounce or move, if chipping in front of wheels of the 252 struggles to move not man anough drive pump.

What about the new operator presence system, probably one of the most up-to-date safety systems on any stump grinder in its class. As you say the 252 does have duel wheel to make the unit much more stable. and with the appropriate maintenance this machine will well suit any skilled operator.

I don't believe there is the single perfect machine for every instance of stump, which is why a SC252 is only part of my fleet of machines. I have run a SC252 for the past 13 years and accumulated over 2000 hours on it. Together we have removed stumps on 60deg slopes (yes, it is possible) wetland and every domestic circumstance from a couple of inch stumps to giant 16'.

The standard design does eat belts and bearings but with a few simple mods it is a very cheap machine to run.

The main attraction of a machine such as this is the lightweight and simple design, the fewer electrical circuits the better, a machine which is not running is not earning money! The auto sweep is fantastic for all of us who are, at some point, in a hurry to 'get the job done' without over stressing the machine. As operators, this the only electronic circuitry we require. Operators should be operating within their knowledge parameters, a full understanding of the machines capabilities/characteristics promotes safety. We know they can turn over, especially if the cutting wheel is elevated and cutting at its full height, or if the chip build-up under the machine is not sufficient to stop it careering off down someones' bowling green lawn when the cutting head is at surface level.

I have not turned mine over yet (I probably will the next time I use it) but these machines are very well built, have excellent manoeuvrability and are easy to source parts and to work on. It is one of the more versatile machines which sets me above the competitors when (with steps/banks) the removal of particular stump is claimed not to be possible!

So, what would you guys upgrade too from a Bandit HB20 27hp...?

We mostly do domestic jobs but are looking at the bigger picture too.

I have wondered about the Bandit hydrostatic model (2250XP...?) but as its only 27hp would I be getting any benefit?

Thanks in advance for your advice

Ty

I would imagine over a few 12inch stumps the HB20 would be quicker. Over a day, the self propelled would be better.
