Small timer. Jr log arch v compact tractor

Recommended Posts

Hi all, need some advice. I am an arborist mainly, but recently have been getting a few wood thinning/coppicing work come though.

After the trees are felled they need to be piled up ready for the big boys to cart them away

But what should I use to pile up the cord?

Drag them about with a compact tractor. Kubota iseki yamar

Or use a hand log arch, the logrite jr arch looks great, if not a little pricey at £650inc vat

Any advice help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Depending on size of timber and distance to cart, i'd go compact tractor with a choker chain from clarks forestry. If you have a frame or bar on link arms the front end of log will lift off ground like the arch.

Because you need the rest if you can get it in forestry.

Ditto. Compact tractor will go allday you with logging arch not that long. Could you pick up other work for compact tractor.

Thanks for the replies lads. Appreciate your replies. The woodlands that I am working in are generally quiet small 16'' diameter max.

I don't know too much about compact tractors. A few questions I would ask you both would be.

4 or 2wd

Could I get one for about 2k

Where is a good place to look I am in Suffolk

Thanks a lot really helpful thus far!

I hadn't thought about a dumper.

Love the look of the tractor and home made skidder.

Didn't think you could get a cheap tractor 1k. Seems too good to be true.

Thought the smaller the tractor the smaller the price tag!

Obviously I was wrong.

Is eBay the best place to look for sub 2k tractors. Compact or not.

Googled second hand tractors and get everything but what I am looking for.

Thank god for arbtalk and its helpful members!

My link in my last post dose compact tractors. With a compact you will probably only drag 1 good stick the size you are talking about moving. On the other hand.A large tractor has to be road worthy but a compact can be trailered to site, most large tractors that are cheap need a lot of work to make them road worthy unless very lucky plus its got to be insured.
