My first go at an eagle. Done a rough block out at the end of last summer

and it's sat under a tarp until recently when I've had more time & got my new carving bar

All chainsaw, finished the beak / claws with sander & eyes with hand chisel

Great job GeeSaw!

Do I recognize the block out from my pattern posted on chainsawcarve.ca ??

If so I am pleased to see your interpretation.

Other FREE chainsaw carving patterns are posted there to share.

My patterns are meant to be for block out and it is up to the carver to study the subject and interpret their own way.

Setting the proportions at the start is very important.

Brilliant job there Gee ... especially if this is your first eagle. However , a word of caution !!! Should you really name your carvings ? Are you too close to them ?? I have kept my first attempts, and with Charley the Croc, Harry Hare, Willy Wizard, Bollock the Bear etc my gardens quickly gettin crowded !

Great Job:thumbup1:

Thanks all

I don't think I have any more production shots Alvin, I must remember to keep a camera handy!

But when you're in the zone you don't always remember :blushing:

Haha well spotted Rooster I did go off the pattern on chainsawcarve.ca, many thanks for the free examples!

I found it a great pattern to go off when carving my eagle :thumbup1:

I know what you're saying FriarsGorse I shouldn't get too attached & keep carvings but it would be good to

look back in a few years and hopefully see how my carvings have progressed.

But I'm sure you're right & I'll be running out of room before I know it

Dave, all the colour was done by a darn good scorching :gasthrower: & the base tones were achieved by

slightly moistening the base & brushing in the burnt dust I'd just wire brushed off, left to dry & finished with decking oil.

nice idea with the dust, might try that. it might wash off tho, let me know in a few weeks?

given you have clearly mastered the blocking AND the shape/form of a bird, for your next one study feathers and how they lie on the wings, you can get seem nice effects 'layering' feathers on top of each other, really makes them 'pop out'
